What is a doula?

The Greek word doula means caregiver. We now use the word to describe a trained and experienced labor companion who provides the client and their partner(s) continuous emotional support, physical comfort and assistance in obtaining information before, during and just after childbirth.

Why choose a doula?

You don't have options if you don't know what they are. As a doula, my job is to be your birth detective - to help you know all your options, and to help you advocate for yourself and your baby, and arm you with the best possible information available to you.

What don't you do?

• Clinical/Medical tasks (cervical checks, medications, etc.)

• Make decisions or speak for you. I act as your birth detective, helping you uncover all the needed information so you can make informed choices.

• Replace your partner or support person. I will also be there to support them, giving them a break, but also helping them learn how to best support you during your labor.

When will you join me in labor?

I prefer that you call me when you think you are in labor, even if you do not yet need me. I can answer questions and make suggestions over the phone. We will decide if I should come right then or wait for further change. I usually need approximately one hour to get to you from the time you ask me to come. We will also decide where to meet - at your home, the hospital or the birth center. Except for extraordinary circumstances, I will remain with you throughout labor and birth.

 

What happens if you are unavailable when I go into labor?

I will always secure a back-up doula in advance of your estimated due date. Ideally, you will also meet this person so that you are the most comfortable when the time comes.

When should I hire a doula?

It’s never too early! Ideally, you would hire your birth doula by the beginning of your third trimester, but it’s good to start interviewing birth doulas during the second trimester so you have plenty of time to determine who is the best fit.
